MidwestVeg goes to Memphis… and the hospital

Last month my husband and I planned a little getaway. We didn’t want to go too far since we had just planned on being away for a weekend (Friday 13th weekend to be exact), but still wanted to have a great time. When I suggested Memphis, Tennessee my husband asked ‘What’s there?’ It’s still hard to believe the man has known me for 11 years and had no clue why I’d want to go to Memphis. After I reminded him that GRACELAND was the main attraction he got it and it was a done deal. I spent a few weeks planning the entire trip. Right down to the food. But it’s never really a good time until your plans just don’t go as planned. Now is it?

Keep in mind we drove over 300 miles in the middle of a heatwave in a car WITHOUT air conditioning. I know. Fun times. We made it work though. However, by the time we got there all we wanted to do was check-in and chill out in the air conditioned room. But we were early. A whole 2 hours early. It would have been 3 hours early, but it took us a whole hour to find the hotel. It was oddly located on an island which required lots of u-turns just to get there. After checking out the area and then finally checking in, we decided to eat an early dinner and go to sleep early to get a head start on Saturday.

I used Vegan Crunk’s Memphis Vegan Dining Guide as well, my vegan dining guide. There were SO MANY places I was hoping to try out, but I was only able to try one. Casablanca! It was conveniently located right down the street from our hotel so it was very easy to find. I took Vegan Crunk’s advice and got the Big Mac of the Middle East with a side of hummus. That was EASILY the BEST falafel I’ve ever had. I washed it all down with a Hubert’s Cherry Limeade which I got at the Whole Foods in Memphis also located right down the street from our hotel. The best meal I had in a while.

Saturday morning was the BIG day. I finally got to go to Graceland! The photos shown above were taken from my iPhone. I still haven’t gotten around to processing the millions of photos I took with my camera; Jack. But I’ll get to why in a few. Anyway, the first photo is of the entrance. I can’t even explain the stupid grin I had on my face while snapping that photo. It really was an amazing experience. The other photo is of me standing in front of The King’s plane. My husband was able to get the name just above my head which is all kinds of awesome since that’s MY name!

A few days later (we were home by this point thank God!) I woke up with extreme abdominal pain. But not even extreme abdominal pain will keep me down. I went about my business as usual. When I woke up with that same pain for the 2nd day in a row I decided to go to the Emergency Room. Several hours and tests later I was told I had appendicitis. My appendix was removed that same day. I only had to stay 2 nights and then I was able to go home. But not before eating some nasty hospital food.

I’d like to go into greater detail and talk lots more about my trip, but sitting in this chair is a bit painful. After all I do have 11 staples sticking out of my tummy. So there you have it. One awesome trip to Memphis, and a not so awesome trip to the hospital. I will say this though. I’m not done with Memphis. I can’t wait to go back. There’s so much more to see and do.

I hope y’all are feeling better than I am!
